1. Jenny Wiley State Resort Park

Located nearby in Prestonburg, Jenny Wiley State Resort Park’s biggest attraction is the spring warblers during migration. You will see numerous types of colorful little warblers in the spring and summer, and you may even sight some American redstarts. Even the asphalt road and the golf course are prime spots for birding, and you’re sure to see several species of birds, especially eastern bluebirds.

2. Yatesville Lake State Park

Located in Louisa, Yatesville Lake State Park boasts an assortment of waterfowl, warblers, cardinals, woodpeckers, grouse, and doves. You are likely to cross paths with wild turkeys, and you may even spot a bald eagle or osprey. Birds that visit seasonally include hummingbirds, purple martins, and robins, and campers can hear the nighttime songs of whip-poor-wills during the summer camping season.

3. Carter Caves State Resort Park

Carter Caves State Resort Park is best known for its gem and mineral mining, but it’s also a lively hub of birdlife year-round. Winter brings sparrows, wrens, finches, red-breasted nuthatches, pine siskins, and even the occasional evening grosbeak and brown creeper. Spring and summer bring the warbler migration as well as other interesting birds to note, such as red-breasted grosbeaks, double-breasted cormorants, cedar waxwings, ruby-throated hummingbirds, and red-tailed hawks.

4. Greenbo Lake State Resort Park

Greenbo Lake State Resort Park is another perfect place to observe migrating and mating warblers in the spring, and a variety of migrating birds and waterfowl passing through in the fall. Winter then brings an assortment of hawks, finches, and sparrows. Take a pontoon boat or a canoe out on the lake to observe swifts and belted kingfishers along the shoreline, and listen to the chatter and singing of hummingbirds, chickadees, robins, catbirds, and mockingbirds.

5. Pine Mountain

Located just over state lines in Virginia, Pine Mountain is another favorite location for migrating warblers, specifically Swainson’s warblers, Kentucky warblers, worm-eating warblers, and cerulean warblers. Also abundant among the streams and dense forests are wood thrushes, blue-gray gnatcatchers, Acadian flycatchers, and scarlet tanagers.

Look to the skies anywhere you are, and you are likely to witness the common majesty that soaring birds embody. Drive a little farther out into the world and find yourself immersed in the majesty. You may not be able to defy gravity, but you can still enjoy the gorgeousness around you with ease at any of these beautiful locations!
