The history of Salyersville begins around the year 1800 with the settlement and fortification of Prater's Fort. The location went by a variety of names, like Licking Station and Adamsville, before it was finally and officially named Salyersville in 1860 after State Representative Samuel Salyer.

History is a huge part of our community in Salyersville, and we're proud of all Salyersville has overcome since its founding, whether it was the enormous economic hardships that hit hard during the Great Depression or its pivotal role in the restoration of wild elk into their natural, mountain habitat.

Today, there are plenty of things to do in Salyersville, especially if you're a lover of the outdoors. The surrounding landscape is hilly and wild and the perfect spot of comfy camping or exciting backpacking trips.

Salyersville is also home to the famous Pioneer Village. This intricate and interesting historical city lets you and the whole family fall back into pioneer days to see - and feel - what it was like to live as a colonist.
