1. US 23 Country Music Highway Museum

Music lovers can’t miss a visit to this shrine to East Kentucky country music at 120 Stave Branch. With 14 exhibits of memorabilia belonging to country stars from the local area, including Loretta Lynn and Chris Stapleton, the museum also hosts Front Porch Pickin’ sessions every Thursday at 7 pm to bring bluegrass music to life.
And with the 900-watt 19-speaker Harman Kardon Premium system in your Ram 1500, you’ll be able to keep listening to your favorites all the way home.

2. Van Lear Historical Society Coal Miners’ Museum

A testimonial to the five coal mines that operated in the area in the early twentieth century, this location at 78 Miller’s Creek Road gives a fascinating insight into the history of the town. Visitors can see coal mining tools, a model of Van Lear, and recreations of the doctor’s office and post office. And the building is reputed to be haunted, so keep your sixth sense tuned for a spooky presence or reserve one of the Ghost Tours by calling the museum.

3. Mountain Homeplace Living History Farm

Whether you want to find out more about the history of agricultural living, or just want to meet some animals, the Mountain Homeplace Living History Museum is a great destination for the whole family. You can visit the church, schoolroom, blacksmith shop, cabin, and barn, or see farmworkers in period costumes demonstrating skills from the time. Kids will love meeting the farm’s residents in the petting zoo.
The museum can be found at 445 Kentucky Route 2275 and opens from 9 am to 5 pm Monday to Saturday and at noon on Sundays.

4. East Kentucky Science Center and Planetarium

Located on the Prestonsburg campus of the Big Sandy Community and Technical College at 1 Bart T Combs Drive, this STEM education facility is hands-on and interactive. Exhibits about topics such as animals, fossils, and even Lego are great for introducing kids to science, and the planetarium offers fascinating shows featuring the solar system and laser lights with music.
The museum opens from 1 pm to 4 pm from Tuesday to Friday, opening at noon on Saturday and with planetarium shows at 2 pm and 3 pm.
