View from interior of a 2018 Jeep Wrangler looking at a forestWhen it comes to off-road performance, few SUVs on the market can hold a candle to the 2018 Jeep Wrangler. Every Wrangler model is the proud recipient of the Trail Rated badge. In order to earn this badge, a vehicle must successfully overcome a number of grueling tests over the most difficult terrain. Discover the capabilities and features that make the 2018 Jeep Wrangler an absolute off-road beast.

Off-Road-Focused Dimensions

Almost every aspect of the 2018 Jeep Wrangler is designed with off-roading in mind, including its shape, structure, and dimensions. This SUV features an industry-leading 44-degree approach angle, 37-degree departure angle, and 27.8-degree breakover angle. It also has a ground clearance of 10.9 inches, which allows it to ford up to 30 inches of water and move over rough terrain more easily while minimizing damage. The 2018 model is also lighter and stronger than its predecessors, resulting in greater agility, fuel economy, and survivability.

Exterior Off-Road Features

The 2018 Jeep Wrangler is fitted with a number of exterior features for enhanced off-road performance and durability. First of all, its new 33-inch all-terrain wheels give you more ground clearance and better traction for wheeling and crawling on more advanced off-road trails. It also offers heavy-gauge steel skid plates to prevent damage to critical components and steel tow hooks at the front and rear for rescuing other vehicles.

The Rubicon has front and rear Dana axles with thicker tubes and forgings for improved rigidity and durability. For smoother movement over rocks and other hurdles, and better overall off-road capability, opt for the available rock rails and winch-capable steel front bumper.

Legendary 4×4 Systems

Every Jeep Wrangler model comes standard with a 4×4 drive system. There are three different types of 4×4 systems available: the new Selec-Trac, Command-Trac, and Rock-Trac systems.

Relying on traction control and internal wheel speed sensors, the Selec-Trac 4×4 system features a full-time mode that automatically switches from two-wheel drive to four-wheel drive when the situation demands. It makes driving in adverse weather conditions and on uneven terrain smoother and safer while improving fuel efficiency when using two-wheel drive. The Command-Trac system has a two-speed NV242 GII transfer case with a low gear ratio of 2.72:1 to enable the SUV to climb rocks more competently.

The Rubicon delivers better off-road performance than the other models thanks to its standard Rock-Trac 4×4 system. This system comes with anĀ NV241-Off-Road transfer case with a low gear ratio of 4:1, front and rear Tru-Lok locking differentials, and a feature for disconnecting the front sway bar electronically. It gives you more torque and better control for overcoming the most challenging off-road situations. Hill descent control is available for enhanced control and safety when going downhill.

The 2018 Jeep Wrangler is offered in four trim levels: the base Sport, Sport S, Sahara, and the range-topping Rubicon. If you’re a hardcore off-road enthusiast, the Rubicon is the obvious choice. Schedule a test drive to experience the new Jeep Wrangler’s extraordinary off-road prowess.
