You’ll find plenty of fun and exciting things to do in Paintsville, Kentucky, even if you’re on a budget. The next time you’re looking for inexpensive activities that everyone will enjoy, consider a few of these top options.

1. Paintsville Lake State Park

When you’re interested in a budget-friendly way to explore the great outdoors, head to Paintsville Lake State Park, which charges no admission fee. While you’re there, you can spend the day swimming in the lake or relaxing on the beach. The kids will enjoy the playground, and the park also has a sand volleyball court, horseshoes, and basketball court for everyone to enjoy. If you don’t mind spending a little money, you can head to the marina to rent a pedal boat and spend some time on the water.

2. Carter Caves State Resort Park

Carter Caves State Resort Park is another affordable way to get outside and explore the natural beauty in Kentucky. Although you have to pay a fee to tour the different caves in the park, general admission to the park is free, and you’ll find plenty of other activities you can enjoy that won’t cost you any money. The park has 26 miles of wooded nature trails that range from easy to difficult. You can also bring your own canoe to discover the beauty of the 45–acre Smokey Lake.

3. Dawkins Line Rail Trail

Currently, 18 miles of the Dawkins Line Rail Trail is open to bicyclists, walkers, and horseback riders. When construction of the trail is complete, it will stretch for 36 miles and be the state’s longest rail trail. As you travel along the trail, you’ll have an opportunity to explore some of the history of the state and the former railroad line, including several abandoned coal structures and the 662-foot-long Gun Creek Tunnel.

4. Oil Springs Cultural Arts and Recreation Center

Located about 9 miles west of Paintsville in Oil Springs is the Oil Springs Cultural Arts and Recreation (OSCAR) Center. The center once served as a high school and elementary school for the community. Today, it’s a regional art education center that offers affordable classes throughout the year in weaving, pottery, painting, woodcarving, music, dance, and more. The center is also home to The Story Patch, which is a community theater that features performances by local writers and actors.

5. Downtown Paintsville Walking Tour

If you want to learn a little more about downtown Paintsville and see some of the area’s historic buildings, head out on the Downtown Paintsville Walking Tour. This free self-guided tour starts out at the Stafford House, which was originally owned by one of the founders of the city and is the oldest house in the county. As you continue on your tour, you’ll pass several other historic buildings, including the Mayo Mansion and Patterson-Slone House.

You don’t have to spend a lot of money to have a good time in Paintsville. Instead, you can simply enjoy one of these low-cost options.
