1. Mountain HomePlace

You can visit a working farm built in the 1850s about 5 miles outside Paintsville in Staffordsville. Say hello to the farm animals in the barn, observe the work in the blacksmith shop, and explore the old church, one-room schoolhouse, and cabin that are all onsite as well.
Mountain HomePlace is located at 745 KY-2275, and it’s part of Paintsville Lake State Park. It’s open for visitors from April through October, Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

2. Front Porch Pickin’ at the U.S. 23 Country Music Highway Museum

Enjoy a live bluegrass concert every Thursday evening at 7 p.m. Children are free and adult admission is just $3 for this event, which takes place on an outdoor stage at the U.S. 23 Country Music Highway Museum in Staffordsville. You can also browse exhibits about the lives of more than a dozen performers from the area, including Loretta Lynn, Dwight Yoakam, and Keith Whitley.
The museum is located at 100 Stave Branch Rd. If you want to visit outside at the Front Porch Pickin’ event, stop in during regular business hours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

3. Dawkins Line Rail Trail

You can hike, bike, or horseback ride on this 36-mile trail that spans from Hagerhill to Evanston, making it the longest rail-to-trail project in Kentucky. Along the Dawkins Line Rail Trail, you’ll go through both the Gun Creek Tunnel and the Tip Top Tunnel.
The Jenny’s Creek Trailhead in Hagerhill is located about 6 miles from Paintsville. You’ll find it just off Hwy 825 between Blue Grass Dr and Johnson Branch. The trail is open from sunrise to sunset.

4. Jenny Wiley State Resort Park

Located less than a 30-minute drive from Paintsville, this state park in Prestonsburg is a great place to visit on a hot day. You can relax at the beach on Dewey Lagoon or rent a kayak, pontoon, or canoe and go boating on Dewey Lake. The park also offers mountain biking, hiking, birdwatching, camping, picnicking, a restaurant, a lodge, and even guided tours to spot the resident elk population.
Jenny Wiley State Resort Park is located at 75 Theatre Ct. If you plan to visit the nature center, it’s open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. You can also access the Dawkins Line ​Rail Trail from here.
