1. Carter Caves State Resort Park
If you’re looking to take a step back in time, plan a visit to Carter Caves State Resort Park. Located north of Paintsville, the park is home to some of the best-known caverns in the eastern part of the state, including the Carter and Cascade Cave system. Both cave systems offer tours that showcase the unique geological forces at work in the area. You can also take a tour of the Saltpetre Cave to learn how people mined for gunpowder ingredients during the War of 1812.
2. Middle Creek National Battlefield
Located south of Paintsville, the Middle Creek National Battlefield commemorates the Battle of Middle Creek, which was fought January 10, 1862, during the Civil War. The battle was one of the largest and most significant in Eastern Kentucky. When you visit the battlefield, you’ll find two walking paths lined with informative panels that tell the story of the battle and explain the strategic offensive and defensive measures used by the Confederate and Union troops.
3. Mountain HomePlace
Mountain HomePlace is an 1850s working farm that covers 27 acres within Paintsville Lake State Park. As you tour the grounds, you can get an up-close view of the livestock, take a look inside the McKenzie double-pen family cabin, see the one-room schoolhouse, or take a seat inside the old Fish Trap United Baptist Church. You can also watch as re-enactors dressed in authentic period costumes demonstrate old skills, such as quilting, forging horseshoes, gardening, and tending to farm animals.
4. Francis M. Stafford House
Located near the heart of Paintsville, the Francis M. Stafford House is a historic home that once belonged to John Stafford, who helped establish the city of Paintsville. Although John built the house, it’s named after his son Francis, who inherited the property in 1869. The original portion of the house was built in 1843, making it the oldest home in the county. Today, you can take a tour of the home to learn more about the Staffords, view the home’s unique architecture, and discover more about its fascinating history.
5. Loretta Lynn Birthplace
If you’re a fan of country music, you can’t miss the opportunity to tour the Loretta Lynn Birthplace. Located just outside of Paintsville in Van Lear, Butcher Holler is where Loretta and her famous sister Crystal Gayle grew up. You can sit on the porch swing and take in views of the surrounding mountains. Then, head inside the cabin to see authentic Loretta Lynn memorabilia and unique antiques, like her mother’s original washboard.
