An Exhaust Pipe

Any time your vehicle starts to make a new noise, you’ll notice and wonder what’s causing the ruckus. Unless you’ve invested time and money into aftermarket parts to make your exhaust louder, any additional noise from your exhaust should be cause for concern. You want to find out what’s causing the increase in volume and get it fixed as soon as possible. Here are four common reasons for a loud exhaust on your vehicle.

1. Engine Exhaust Leak

To check if you have an exhaust leak, park your vehicle on level ground, apply the parking brake, and then lay down on the ground next to your vehicle to listen for an exhaust leak. Do not put your head underneath a running vehicle for safety reasons. Listening to your exhaust system will help you determine if the leak is in the front or the rear of the vehicle. If it’s in the front, you may have an exhaust leak at the engine level. This type of leak could be as simple as a loose flexible pipe connection or a bad gasket, but it could also be a cracked manifold, which is a serious problem.

2. Center of Vehicle Exhaust Leak

If you hear a leak in the vehicle’s center, this repair is probably the least expensive. Typically, a leak in the center of the exhaust system is a hole in your exhaust pipe. Holes can be welded or you can replace the section of your exhaust system with the hole. A lousy seal may also cause this type of leak at the catalytic converter, a loose connection in the system, or a bad seal at the center resonator. All of these problems are also a cheap fix. If you have to replace the catalytic converter, you’re looking at a hefty repair bill.

3. Back of Vehicle Exhaust Leak

Leaks in the back of the vehicle may be caused by a loose connection or a bad seal at the point of the muffler. A hole in the muffler itself could also cause it. Mufflers can sustain damage while driving, rust out, and just wear out. Replacing a muffler isn’t a high-priced repair and can make all the difference in the sound of your exhaust system.

4. Tailpipe Backfires or Sputters

If you’re experiencing backfires or sputters coming from your tailpipe, take note. This type of noise is not a problem with the exhaust at all and is instead an issue with the engine tuning. Stuttering, backfiring, and sputtering are typically signs that something under the hood needs to be repaired or adjusted. This type of noise has nothing to do with your exhaust system, even if it appears as though it’s coming from the exhaust via the tailpipe.

If your vehicle has recently started making a new noise of any kind, it’s important to get it into a certified professional as soon as possible to keep the issue from getting any worse. The trained technicians at your local Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram dealership would be happy to look over your vehicle and provide you with a diagnosis and estimate for repairs.
